Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, or SLT, is a safe laser eye treatment for those suffering from glaucoma. SLT treatment reduces intraocular eye pressure for most patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and is offered inside Kwale Eye Centre’s state of the art facility in Calgary.
As the laser used for SLT treatment operates at relatively low power levels, it targets only affected cells within the eye, leaving the surrounding tissue area unaffected and intact. SLT treatment does not rely on medicines, produces no scar tissue, and most patients find that they have no pain after the procedure. Typically, inflammation and pain subsides 24 hours after undergoing surgery. Because of these benefits, SLT can be safely repeated on patients.
For those who have had unsuccessful Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) treatment or used pressure-lowering drops in the past, SLT can still be performed and is often an effective way of treating glaucoma.
Depending on the severity of your glaucoma, patients may need additional medications to control their glaucoma. However, the low side affects of SLT, make it an excellent alternative to glaucoma management. Mitchell Eye Centre’s experienced doctors and medical staff will recommend the solution that best fit your needs.
Patients receiving SLT laser eye surgery can expect to see noticeable results within 3 months following treatment. SLT laser eye surgery can reduce the eye pressure caused by glaucoma for up to 5 years, and for some patients, even longer.
